A Short Stint at Sg. Udang, Province Wellesley by Bicycles

It was a journey back to Penang from Kuala Lumpur with my buddy Joseph as usual we like to take detour to steal a short ride from our monotonous travel to see bits and pieces of beautiful Malaysia. This time we picked Nibong Tebal 高淵 with a plan to cycle towards to sea.
Our destination was set for Sg. Udang a small fishing village and as soon as we arrived at Nibong Tebal we took out our 2 wheels and started with a straight ride along Jalan Atas for the discovery.
Nibong Tebal is the largest town in South Province Wellesley (now known as Seberang Prai) with interesting places of attraction such as firefly sanctuary, nice and relaxing kampong homestay and good Teochew foods like crab porridge. Over the years many prewar shops have left been dilapidated and many have vanished if we do not take preservation of these priceless buildings we could only see them in photographs in the future and that will be a pitiful case.

Still along Jalan Atas and not too far away from the town we began to see Malay houses as we moved towards the coast.
Sign of fishing boats started to excite us and there were many whenever we were close to the river.
We took off our direction to check the inner community the people were very friendly and easy going I just wish we could stay a bit longer to share more with them.
The atmosphere is awesome so green, quiet and pure.
And we were out of the inner kampong and back to the route for the fishing village.
Surprisingly we found this cycle path by the State Government but we did not venture into it maybe the next time.
So this is Sg. Udang fishing village, looks like the houses have transformed from timber to concrete. This road leads to a dead end and one of many platforms to harbour the fishing boats.
The dead end awaiting for boats with fishes.
View from the edge as boats returning home with their catch.
The locals moving around in the town mostly with motorbikes and bicycles.
Irrigation canals for oil palm plantations and paddy fields running parallel with the road we were using. Time was going against us we had to return to our car and head for Penang island. This lovely short stint took a ride of 21km and I hope we can come back again for more of this place. Bye bye Sg Udang we might come back again!!!

Lunch @ Soon Chi Sg Bakap, Nibong Tebal

It was on our way back to back KL during our North Trail, we were supposed to have lunch in Ipoh but time was running out. Kok Leong brought us here, Restoran Soon Chi at the main trunk road of Sungai Bakap.
The food here was one is of the best during the entire trip of visitings and makan. Pricing was reasonable and service was fast. It's obviously a place that is worth another visit.
Efficiency is the name of the game, hot water in thermos flasks really for your uninterrupted Chinese tea drinking.
Jo wanted to eat "Yip Kwong Hor" and in anticipation of seeing a bright yellow moon on the fried noodle but it did not happen..... anyway the fried noodle was very good it was done the Sungai Bakap style....& way to go Sg. Bakap!!!
A jug of passion drink into Guinness ice packed glasses and it's non-alcohol.
Nice cold and interesting Passion fruit juice.....

Crab porridge was as good as Nibong Tebal's, the crabs were fresh and sweet. Everyone loves it.
Kam Heong La La Clams.
Pork ribs deep fried with salted eggs would be lovely if there were beer or whisky around but unfortunately we are driving....
Simple stir fried cabbage with small dried shrimps and yet ho jiak.
Another veggie just like home cooked stir fried long beans with prawns .... truly yummy.
This is something special, it was a promfret fish (local) done in two tastes, what you are seeing is the super crispy fried fish bones & fins and 100% palatable. and the fish meat is buried under neath.
The first plate of fried koay teow noodle for two person wasn't enough to go around, they wanted to savour more and requested another plate to complete the lunch and this time we requested to see the yellow moon.... I prefer the first plate. Never try telling the local chef how to cook.... stick to their way and you will enjoy the food. "Chow"...

Going to Tanjong Berembang, Nibong Tebal for Prawn Curry

We were on another trail to north of Peninsula Malaysia with the intention of visiting relatives and a bit of makan adventure.
3 cars 14 people with an early crisis. One of the cars’ battery went kaput and a slight delay.
Here we were, the GPS device took us here through Nibong Tebal town, a Malay kampong and eventually a dead end next to a connecting bridge.
It was a short walk under the scorching sun with many motorcyclists using the bridge.
Just at the other end of the bridge you will see Lim Aik Chew’s famous “Kari Udang” shop.
I met two KL friends Lawrence Sze & Simon, not bad out of 7 tables in the shop 2 were friends (feeling at home, hehehe....).
The time was 2.10pm when we were waiting for our food.
Deep fried Golden tail pomfret with preserved bean sauce topping was delicious.
The fresh water prawns specially ordered in advance in their famous curry version, it was spicy and a wonderful experience at Lim Aik Chew. If you miss the supply of fresh water prawns then you will get sea water prawns instead. My advice call first for fresh water prawns.
Steamed roti - a lovely soft bread and the prawn curry was a good match.
The prawns' heads are big and this batch of prawns have sinful roe that you cannot resist.....LOL.
Steamed fish with perserved beans was yummy and fresh.
Stir fried lettuce.

Bye bye Lim Aik Chew, now that we know you and the way to reach you we will come again.

Crab Porridge @ Nibong Tebal, Penang

It seems that there is a bit of hoo-ha as to the originality of crab porridge in Nibong Tebal but we are not that concerned for that moment we just wanted good food before we continue our journey back home. N.T. Cheang Kee seems a good place to eat crab porridge.

Our first order was the “Too Boo Sui” @ poached baby octopus. I like it very much & to be eaten with the peanut topping chilli sauce. Look at those juicy & succulent tentacles….yummy yummy.

Teow Chew Nang eating Teow Chew steamed Pomfret fish. It was a big fish, the gravy was so sweet & tasty and the gravy went dry before the empty plate was taken away.

Fried Prawns were also gorgeous, juicy & fresh. I don’t have to peel the shell because they were so crispy and nice to chew. Drool drool ……

Tofu fried with seafood & meat was a normal dish but a good balancing dish.

Fried “Boi Leng” veggie (sounds like dragon tail) with black dried fungus (Mok Nee) was an interesting dish.

A German Pork Knuckle nearly knocks off everyone on the table, suddenly we were afraid of food it seems huge. A crispy meat with hidden onion pickles found underneath the knuckle was part packed back to Kuala Lumpur.

Fried La La clams were  fresh and delicious.

Finally the highlight of this place …. introducing the great Crab Porridge prepared by the Teow Chew nang of Nibong Tebal. Very very good.

Everyone gets their equal share of the delicacy. Look at the fresh crabs with red roe in the porridge too… ain’t it attractive… wait till you taste it.

All uncles & aunties have forgotten the danger of uric acid during such food adventure like this. Eat first think later……. New Year is approaching maybe we will draw out a good resolution for ourselves…. HapPy hAppy NeW YeaR.
