Sun Tuck Kee 新德记炒粉店 for a Fried Ipoh Hor Fun

We just could not leave Ipoh without savouring its famous fried noodle specifically Yut Kwong Hor, so we headed to Jalan Yau Tet Shin looking for Tuck Kee. Unfortunately Tuck Kee was closed at that time but a door away there is Sun Tuck Kee literally it means "New Tuck Kee". More than 6 years ago I have blogged Restoran Tuck Kee & its famous fried noodles, I just hope that this Sun Tuck Kee can do justice.
Yut Kwong Hor or "moonlight" fried noodle is one of the popular dishes serve at this place. A raw egg is placed on top of the fried Hor Fun which represents the bright moonlight. Well the taste was found to be good and yummy.
Wat Tan Hor or also known as Cantonese Fried Kuay Teow is supposedly the most popular of all the fried noodle, the serving comes with a bowl flooded with its thick gravy. It's different from the one in Penang Tua Pan Kuay Teow I think I like the version in Penang. One thing for sure the kuay teow (hor fun) in Ipoh is rather unique it is smooth and no other places can beat it.
A plate of Ipoh famous bean sprouts is not to be missed it is simple yet lovely to eat.
All in all the fried noodles at Sun Tuck Kee is found to be rather good, obviously there is a competition between the the old one and the new old ... to me it's about the same.
Before we cycle to the train station we went to Funny Fountain 奇峰 for its Tau Fu Fa 豆腐花, a small bowl for RM1.20 just enough to fill my teeth cavities. Pricing seems to increase each time I patronise this stall.
Bye Bye Ipoh we will be back again.

Char Siew Pao at Restoran New Paradise 新乐园酒家 Bercham, Ipoh

We have the privilege of a local boy, Jason who took the liberty to show us his home ground and where to eat good food. Thanks a lot to him we continue to know more new places for good food. Restoran New Paradise is located at the junction at Jalan Bercham and Lorong Bercham 6. Make use of the GPS coordinates provided and make your way to discover this food gem.
We were told to try the popular Char Siew Pau 叉烧包 and a must no miss food.
The inside of the awesome Char Siew Pao.
Lo Mai Kai 糯米雞 was delicious, soft and juicy with generous ingredients in it.
I love fried fish balls, my first love is Mee Bon's at Ipoh Road, KL and the balls here are also as good, in fact better than Foh San's. Thumb up to that.
It was surely a good visit to New Paradise, our Singaporean friends packed 260 frozen char siew pao. I hope the immigration did not give them any problem for bringing the pao. So do check out this interesting place whenever you are in Ipoh.

Nasi Kandar at Kedai Kopi Yong Suan, Ipoh

The last time I ate here was nearly 5 years ago, this time I brought along Jo to try the nasi kandar ayam merah or rather popularly known as nasi ganja. My previous write-up of this place can be seen here.
A typical nasi kandar with a piece of ayam merah, half salted egg, slices of cucumber and gravies. And this is enough to explode your crave.
For a change I tried it with a piece of fried fish instead of the ayam merah. I like it and enjoy the rice very much.
The queue is for those buying takeaway Nasi Kandar, if you are eating at the restaurant just look for a place to sit and order. Enjoy the nasi ganja.

A Weekend Up North for Kate's Wedding Function

This trip has been marked in the calendar for at least 6 months ago with an objective to attend a wedding in Bukit Mertajam. Eight of us took the Friday off and left Klang Valley early in the morning. We stopped at Ipoh for a Dim Sum breakfast at Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum .
I called a friend in Ipoh for the direction to a cultural village somewhere in the vicinity of Sam Poh Tong Temple. Thanks to Kok Choo for the direction to this amazing place.
This place is known as Qing Xin Ling Leisure & Cultural Village
清心嶺休闲文化村 and it's GPS coordinates is 4.561987, 101.124208 . You will need to go through housing scheme before reaching the place, the housing scheme is called Taman Saikat.
There are many bicycles and cargo bikes for you to use and it's free of charge or rather it's already included in the RM4.00 entrance fee. I enjoyed this bike with my father in law beaming all the way during the ride.
It was fun hiking the trail to the top, surprisingly there are so many old exhibits along the trail, it was a pleasure taking photos of these old items. So do not forget to make yourself up there.
The word “Qin Xin Ling” (清心嶺) means “Serene Hill”. It is the latest attraction near Gunung Rapat. Go check this place out, there is also accommodation available if you do want to stay there for a night.
At last we attended Kate Chuah & Seanz' wedding dinner at St. Anne Hall, Bukit Mertajam.
We put up the night at Lai Yoong's home and in the morning we went out for a lovely ride around Kulim town.
The rain tree of more than 70 years old near the clock tower of  Kulim and it was so nice to see it is still standing majestically at the position.
We proceeded to Penang Island and crossed to the island using the conventional method and it was fun taking the ferry.
Immediately after we embarking from the ferry I took the group to 3D Trick Art Museum while I cycled to Time Square to sort out the accommodation. I was told they had a good time in the museum.
A view from the condo we rented for the night at Time Square. The location of this place is simply ideal.
I rented a 4 wheeler that was able to take non cyclists and this was just perfect. I was really excited when I managed to get hold of this machine. The rental was RM80.00 for two hours.
After a second round of breakfast at Chew Jetty we started to roam around the heritage area of Georgetown. Everything seem to jell in nicely. I can see the satisfaction from their faces especially when they were moving on their bikes. So let's go see places.
The weather was absolutely awesome.
We need not have to walk and could see so many places, that was a great pan indeed.
The 2 hours rental time was running out fast I decided to bring them over to Beach Street for the Car Free Morning activities. The traffic was bad the 4 wheeler was having problem squeezing through but it eventually managed to get through with lots of fun.
Here we were the eight of us at Georgetown Car Free zone.
Let's have some fun and refreshment before we return the bicycles.
Lunch at Ong Cheng Huat Seafood 王清发海鲜, Bagan Lallang Butterworth before we headed back to Kuala Lumpur.

Ming Court Hong Kong Tim Sum at Ipoh 明阁香港点心

All the while we will patronise Foh San whenever we are in Ipoh but this time around we are not going to do the same. We visited the shop opposite Foh San for a change, Ming Court Tim Sum.
Apparently this place is popular among the local and pricing is reasonable. Please do not park your car illegally as compound by the Local Authority is very common, so park your car at the right space and eat peacefully.
Instead of rattan steamers, Ming Court serves with stainless steel cylindrical containers and characteristically dented, I love its identity.
We were hungry the minute the food was placed on the table it went clear in a record time especially when the Tim Sum was so delicious. We need not have to worry as the replenishment was quick and efficient, let's enjoy the food.
I noticed that as time goes by the sizes of the the Tim Sum are getting smaller and smaller, the siew mai is tiny, cute but still yummy.
Steamed bun or pau is another soft and delicious bite, what a small helping that comes with various choices like siew yoke, sang yoke, lin yung etc etc.
I love the Lo Mai Kai, the fried fish ball was good but I I prefer the one by Mee Bon Ipoh Road. It was in deed a good detour for a breakfast and something different from Kuala Lumpur. After having satisfied ourselves with the wonderful Tim Sum we headed on to Kulim. The eating adventure continues.....

Let's Cycle 2 - Day 4 Ipoh - Sauk

So far this was the best accommodation we had in the tour and thanks to MH Hotel for their support. MH Hotel Ipoh is located in Ipoh Garden. After a good breakfast in the hotel we were set to roll again and this time to an old folk home at Jelapang.
It was a hot day and the first day of fasting in this month of Ramadan.
We passed by The Church of Our lady of Lourdes as we left Ipoh.
Yes this way, we will follow you Rickman.
Poor Baki no drink for him only chatting on the phone on a super hot day.
Here you are our first visit of the day and we will be spending a couple of hours at this home.
After 15km under the hot sun we reached Jelapang Old Folk Home.
Peter Choi, the main man at this home was waiting for us.
The folks at this home with their own stories as how they ended up at this place. A place where we might be here if our loved ones isn't around to take care of us.
No gas cooking is allowed at this home, mostly cooking with charcoal. I was glad to be able my charcoal cooked rice it has been a long time since the last I had one.
Friends from Penang came and performed a couple of oldies for the folks. Thank you young musicians.

The attentive audiences enjoying the performance while waiting for lunch to be served. Uncle Lim, Fenn & Rickman were at the kitchen preparing the food. Uncle Lim not only good in cycling he can cook too!

Of course we have our popular hosts entertaining at the stage.
Peter Choi, the Secretary is doing a good job and I believe he can provide the best for this place, till then Peter we will see you in Penang. The time was about 4.00pm when we left this Old Folk Home and the journey was not going to be easy to Sauk.
Slowly and steadily we pedalled under the hot condition, Sauk is on the way to Gerik and is a detour from our journey to Penang. We shall be there.
It was a tough day for Baki with the scorching heat and he was fasting, we could see how he fight through this day. My salute to him.
Leaving the neighbourhood of Sungai Siput.

At our 49th kilometre we took this overhead  ramp over the railway lines.
And after 58km of cycling to we reached this bridge. Victoria Bridge is a single track railway truss bridge located in Karai, in the state of Perak, Malaysia. It is one of the oldest railway bridges in the country, having been constructed between December 1897 and March 1900 by the Perak Government Railway as a crossing over the Perak River to serve the local tin mining industry. The bridge was officially opened by the late Almarhum SultanIdris Shah I of Perak and the British's Federated Malay States Residents-General Sir Frank Swettenham.
The Victoria Bridge remained in use until 2002, when a wider concrete girder bridge built parallel to the old bridge was completed to take over the role of handling rail traffic. The new bridge is significantly wider, with room to support a second track, but in its early life it was only required to handle a single track until double tracking and electrification was conducted between the Ipoh-Padang Besar line during the late-2000s and early-2010s.
While the old bridge is closed to rail traffic, its adjoining footbridge is still publicly open to motorcycles and pedestrians. Attempts have been made to retain the structure, with occasional maintenance having been conducted on it.
This was the longest day of the tour it was already dark when we were on Baling - Kuala Kangsar road. I just couldn't wait to see any sign showing Suak and it took a long while to see it.
At last after pedalling 76km we finally reached Kamo Home 容县七号 at Sauk. This place reminded me of my grandfather home in Karangan, Kedah, deep in a rubber plantation there was this wooden house where my late dad and his siblings once stayed.
A brief chat with Kamo and a quick cold shower before we went over to a restaurant before it is closed. Everyone was hungry and dinner was on everyone's mind.
The dinner was delicious especially the steamed fish, apparently one must try the fresh water fish in this region.
The four male riders were put on the attic and there was only natural ventilation available, fortunately it got cooler as the night passes by.
Good night and sleep tight there wouldn't be any uploading of photos as the internet is weak at Sauk.
The longest day covering a distance of 76km with one of the most difficult elevations in this tour.
