Cycle Malaysia Day 4 - Ayer Tawar to Taiping

Day 4 we have to be in Taiping and it is more 90km away, we started with our breakfast at Restoran Lima Ratus Tujuh Puluh Lima 575 with some interesting noodles we rarely see in Kuala Lumpur.
We ordered a few type of the noodles such as pork ribs, fish paste, fish balls and the Chinese red wine chicken noodle. The portion was rather big and shared among ourselves to savour the different taste.
Goodbye Ayer Tawar and for the record we were here in this small community in the district of Manjung.
I always target an immediate destination in between such as the nearest town or an attraction to visit and this time it was Pantai Remis. I hope I was able to try their prawn fritters again. It was only 30km away, so Taiping can come later.
A pit stop at the entrance of a Chinese Village called Kg. Merbau with elaborate entrance and wall at the front.
Slowly but surely we are reaching our destinations.
Arriving at Pantai Remis town and passing by with several banks, supermarket and KFC seen along the main road.
I decided to turn off into the old part of the town Pekan Lama hoping to try its prawn fritters. GPS location : 4.458928, 100.628585
We were too early for the prawn fritters hence we had Chee Cheong Fun instead with its local coffee.
We stopped by at this mamak shop to buy water and ended up trying a dough that the owner claimed no other places sell this long forgotten delicacy.
A kind of roti that looks like fried Yau Char Kueh.
We tried a piece which is served with a sauce. It was nice and lovely to eat. Sorry I forgotten the name of this dough.
We decided to stop at Trong Leisure Farm & Resort 自農休閒農莊 for lunch. This place was formerly a duck farm and has converted into a resort with many facilities such as accommodation, fishing, boating, visiting the duck farm & orchard and water fun activities. The roasted Peking duck we had for our lunch was below our expectation.
Finally we reached Taiping town and headed to the train Station to meet Brian who will be joining us to Penang.
We patronised this famous Taiping cendol shop Ansari Cendol at Jalan Barrack.
And off we went to a friend's house where we will be putting up a night at his place.
The ride for the day completed with a distance of 91km covered.

Cycle Malaysia Day 3 - Hutan Melintang to Ayer Tawar

CM Day 3 we are ready for you and it was goodbye to Hotel Lagenda, Hutan Melintang.
After a few metres away from Lagenda Hotel we could smell food and everyone had a good breakfast at this kopitiam.
I made a wrong turn at Hutan Melintang junction and we were heading towards Bagan Datoh instead of Teluk Intan. It was after only nearly 5km we realised we were on the wrong track but fortunately there was a Plan "B".
We re-routed our ride based on Plan "B" that needs a boat to cross Perak River. Plan "B" was originally intended to be used but was kept aside after failing to get in touch with the boatman. I would like to thank Chew Kim Aun for obtaining this invaluable contact, it really came in useful. Yes! this time I managed to contact Upin, the boatman and confirmed that he will pick us up at the river side of Kg. Sg Dulang.
It was a blessing in disguise with Plan "B" it has a safer and nicer road to cycle. If not for this mistake we would be using Route 5 trunk route from the start.
We reached the river side after 15km of cycling and we hope that we were on the right spot for the boat to pick us up if not we have to made a "U" turn back.
There was no sign of any boat, we were a bit of worry and we need to cross to the other side of the river.
Then came a small boat after a short while, it was Upin and everyone was elated. The boat does not look impressive but who cares it is going to take 6 people with 6 bicycles across the river and not forgetting our T-bags.
That was quite a thrill in the morning not knowing exactly what we were heading in the journey. The fare for the boat trip was RM30.00 and this is one of the most exciting and memorable moments of my tour. Terima kasih banyak banyak Upin we hope to call you again in the near future.
The Ketua Kampung of Kg Hujung Rintis was happy to see us and he hopes that more people will come to patronise this place. A picture with him and his kampong folks. Cheers!
Joe and the angels "pao" the whole road, we rode another lovely 13km of kampong road before we exited at Route 5 to Sitiawan.
From the exit at the kampong we have to pedal another 40km to reach Sitiawan, it's quite monotonous at this stretch.
We were lucky to find little hut like this for a pit stop.
At last Sitiawan is approaching and food was already on our minds. Kg. Koh was marked for our food hunt and it is about 2km away before Sitiawan town.
Kedai Makan Kuai Kuai Lai 快快来茶餐室 is the name of the shop which we patronised and it is located at Jalan 5 (GPS location is  4.194443, 100.701844). Visit it next time if you are around in Sitiawan, there is variety of local foods to venture.
This big pot of curry was so enticing. Different places have different types of food I just wonder how this curry was going to be served. Sitiawan has a big Hock Chew community and has lots of interesting foods to try. Apparently this curry is served with fried noodles. We had one or two of it and it was so yummy.
The prawn fritters stall in front of the shop and of course we had this too.
The serving of the curry from the big pot with ingredient like prawns, stingray fish, long beans, cabbage and taupok.
This is a Hock Chew version of Loh Mee, it tastes different from the one found in Penang and it takes one to slowly acquire the taste. I love it after a couple of spoonful.
A visit to Cheong Cia Gong Pian was made for a try of the Hock Chew biscuits. This place has been always popular there were people queuing to sell eventhough the biscuits were not ready. And here we were being part of the crowd to buy the famous Gong Pian.
The making of Gong Pian in the shop.
The Gong Pian hot and fresh from the tradition oven.
Just before we leave Sitiawan we tried the famous cendol at Lorong Tok Perdana the stall is located nearby Cheong Cia Gong Pian.
We rode for another 11km out of Sitiawan to a town called Ayer Tawar and found this lovely hotel. It's bicycle friendly clean with reasonable room rates. As for dinner we were recommended by Miss. Ting to try the food at Restoran Ruby Rose for some Hock Chew dishes like the red wine chicken.
For those who might want to stay at Ting Residence in Ayer Tawar.
Day 3 with a distance of 77km covered and for Day 4 we will be heading to Taiping.

A video clip of the day.

Cycle Malaysia Day 2 - Sekinchan to Hutan Melintang

Good morning Sekinchan, this town has been very popular among the local tourists with many places to stay overnight and many places to eat & shop. We started the morning visiting this food court, Restoran Sin Ming Kee for some decent food like porridge and noodles.
For the benefit of our visiting friend from oversea we did a brief ride around in Sekinchan visiting the rice factory and mango farm before we continued with our journey.
The Guest House owner Mr. Wong accompanied us to the fringe of Sekinchan and bade farewell to us. Thank you Mr. Wong and we shall see you again next time.
From Pantai Redang of Sekinchan there is an earth bund access along the coastline which is rather lengthy and fun to ride along. There are many cows and cow dung found along it and one has to be careful not to roll over the dung.
One for the album at the earth bund.
We decided to turn from the laterite road and set into lovely kampong atmosphere.
We were back to same Mee Udang stall at Sg. Nibong and I agreed with Joe that the quality of the prawn mee was better than the last time we came. Well done Mee Udang King Original we love your noodle and the fresh prawns!
The route on Day 2 was of mainly inner roads without much of a traffic nuisance, indeed a peaceful and enjoyable 62km ride.
A place to stop and rest is essential. Bus stop is one of the most common places to take a break and it is also a good shelter from the heat and rain.
The GPS device I am using is of Garmin Oregon powered by 2 nos. of rechargeable AA dry batteries. The routes for the entire round Peninsula are all loaded in it and I rely on it very much. For instance you can confidently cycle at long stretches of quiet road without fear and knowing exactly your position in relation to the destination you are heading. But at times you have to use it smartly.
After a long and scenic ride in the coconut plantation we found the jetty to take us across Bernam River and over to Hutan Melintang.
We could sense comfort coming its way ..... the food, the bed and a good rest. By the way we were at the verge of crossing to another state and welcome to Perak.
A short distance from the jetty we stopped by at this shop from some food and drinks.
The drizzle continued to bless us as we cycled into the main town hunting for a decent hotel. We checked into Legenda Hotel. The day ended with a dinner at Restoran Seafood Happiness before we called it a night.
Day 2 ride was easy and pleasant with a relatively flat terrain.
